No more 70’s shag carpet!

No more 70’s carpet and 90’s wallpaper!  Drop in on this Q&A between a homeowner and Tuckey team member for insight on modernizing your home:

Q. WE JUST BOUGHT A HOUSE ON A BEAUTIFUL SCENIC LAND, THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE LIVING ROOM HAS DARK GREEN CARPET AND BEDROOMS HAVE MAGENTA CARPETS. WE WANT TO REMOVE WALL PAPER FROM THE LIVING AREA AND BEDROOMS AND WANT TO PAINT THEM. WE ARE DEBATING BETWEEN USING WHITE ON THE WALLS AND CLOSET DOORS OR DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT. THE FURNITURE IN ALL BEDROOMS IS CHERRY OAK WOOD COLOR WITH MATCHING DRESSING TABLE SETS. WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME O CHANGE CARPETS BEFORE THE MOVE. ALSO THE FURNITURE IN THE LIVING AREA IS A SOFA AND LOVE SEAT IN LIGHT GREEN WITH BEIGE OVERTONES AND A BEIGE LEATHER ROCKING CHAIR. NEED SOME HELP HERE? THANKS.

A. If you are planning to remove and replace the carpet in the near future, I would not even take the color of the carpet into consideration when choosing the rest of your room decor. If you plan to keep the carpet for some time, you may want to consider using neutral tones on the walls (taupe, beige, cream, etc). These colors could still “warm” the room without competing with the carpet. In the living area, you may want to consider a large area rug that incorporates the color of the existing carpet or a natural area rug (sisal or jute rugs may work). This will help to downplay the color of the carpet. You may also want to consider area rugs in the bedroom, as well. In short, you may not want to paint the wall a color that will compete with the magenta carpet, unless you plan to replace the carpet in the near future.
