Interior Design Q&A: Painting to Lighten up a Dark Room

July 20, 2014 | 1:13 pm
Dark can be cozy – or it can be gloomy. Lighten it up a bit!

Looking to paint a dark wall a lighter color, but concerned about how it will come out?  Let’s drop in on this Interior Design Q&A:

Q.

I want to lighten a dark wall to a lighter color.  How should I go about this?

A.

To lighten a dark wall to a lighter color, you might first consider using a tinted primer over the existing dark color. The paint store can tint the primer (at no cost) a shade lighter than the paint color you are going to use on the wall. By doing this, you should only have to use a single coat of paint to cover up the dark wall.
